December 2011: Private sales and calf show success for Boars Head

It’s been a busy couple of months at Boars Head with private sales and success at the East of England Smithfield Festival Simmental calf show.

Firstly in November we were delighted to sell Boars Head Snowdrop 2nd in a private deal to John Hawkins’ Chates herd at Cowfold, West Sussex. Snowdrop is an August 2010-born daughter of our herd sire Seaview Prince Charming and is out of the Blackford Falcon daughter Fole Snowdrop 15th. We’d like to wish John all the best with Snowdrop.

December saw the calf show and the trip to the Peterborough Showground proved a successful one as Boars Head Nelly 2nd, another Prince Charming daughter out of Oakhill Nelly 21st, stood second in the September-born heifer calf class, while Boars Head Berbaton 10, a September 2010-born son of Prince Charming again, stood third in a competitive September-born bull calf class. Berbeton is out of Boars Head Grace 2nd, a daughter of Dovefields Gallant, and is yet another successful result of the prolific Grace family which goes back to one of our early foundation females Wistow Grace 40th. Berbaton, who has a TI of +29 and a SRI of +34, has since been sold in a private deal to pedigree breeders G D Key and Son, Norwich, Norfolk, for an undisclosed figure.

September 2011: Boars Head Miranda 2nd takes reserve female championship at Stirling

The trip to Stirling for us this month proved worthwhile as we took the overall reserve female championship with Boars head Miranda 2nd, a January 2010-born daughter of Seaview Prince Charming out of the Balmano Hitman daughter Swallowhill Miranda. This stylish dark red and white heifer sold for 2000gns to James hunter, Slamannan, Falkirk.

August 2011: Boars Head cow features in new Milka advert

It’s not every day you spend your days in a studio in London with a Simmental cow painted purple and a group of actors playing the part of a family, but this is how I spent a couple of days a few months ago. The whole purpose of this bizarre experience was to film a short commercial for Milka “crispy snacks”, of which a short snippet at the beginning features one of our cows. Fortunately she was so well behaved that they’ve asked us back for a second one which is currently being filmed. Here’s the link to the commercial http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REKjUYzeK4Y – it’s a good job it wasn’t one of the show cows, I doubt we’d get extra points for being purple!!

July 2011: Success at Kent Show for the Boars Head team

We had a successful show at this year’s Kent Show under judge Michael Barlow, with Boars Head featuring heavily in the junior heifer classes. We took a first in the class with Boars Head Nelly, while Boars Head Heidi stood second and Boars Head Miranda stood fourth. In the two year old class we stood third with Boars Head Grace. New to this year’s show was an interbreed junior sweepstake competition open to all breeds born in 2010. It was a switch in proceedings as we won this with Boars Head Heidi and stood second with Boars Head Miranda, while Boars head Nelly stood fourth. Heidi then went on to take the championship and Miranda stood reserve champion.
